The efficacy of Soberana 02, in its two doses, is 62%, and exceeds the requirements of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a vaccine candidate against Covid-19 to become a vaccine, which is 50%.
However, the efficacy of the combination of the two doses of Soberana 02 with one of Soberana Plus, the formulation led by the Finlay Institute of Vaccines (IFV) together with other Cuban scientific institutions, is still to be known, and its results, which will logically be superior, will be available soon.
This result was established by an Independent Committee, and although the scientific achievement already complies with the vaccine condition, its emergency use will be authorized, in due time, by the Center for the State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed).
Vicente Vérez Bencomo, director of the IFV, said that this is really a very comforting result, because it was obtained in a scenario of circulation of mutant strains. It is not an efficacy against the original strain, but against the combination of the strains circulating in Havana at the moment, where there is an important percentage of the so-called worrying ones in terms of their transmissibility and their resistance to vaccines.
He added that WHO also recommends that the confidence interval of the analysis of that efficacy exceeds 30 %, and Soberana 02 has confidence intervals above 40 %, so they can say that they are fulfilling the two requirements recommended by the Organization to consider a vaccine candidate as an effective vaccine.
The researcher emphasized that these results were obtained from a total analysis of symptomatic cases that allowed measuring the efficacy with a second dose of 62 symptomatic cases in the placebo group. In the two groups vaccinated with two doses (one remains at two doses and the other follows the third dose) they had 23 and 26 cases, respectively. Those numbers are the ones that give as an estimate the efficacy of 62%.
There are other variables that will be measured in the study such as, for example: the effect of the vaccine in preventing death and severe forms of the disease, as well as what may be the contribution in preventing infection.
“This is a resounding result of the Cuban scientists that expresses many things. It expresses the confirmation, once again, of Fidel’s visionary thinking and of the scientific capacity created by the Revolution, said the First Secretary of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, during an exchange with the scientists.
I am sure,” said Díaz-Canel, “that the poor of the world will have access to our vaccine. And “that has to do with millions of commitments that you have defended, with millions of principles that the Revolution has forged, and in which you have also forged yourselves, and that mean millions of joys for the Cuban people”.
Results like this, obtained in 13 months, – the Cuban president further noted – “are totally exalting for our nation, for Cuban citizenship, and are also emancipating results”, because they are achieved by “a poor country, blockaded, brutally blockaded”, which has lived this last year and a half facing “only aggressions and perverse actions, full of evil, full of hatred, full of brutality”.
